Natural gas

Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon and other gas mixture and in the porous formations of the earth crust is often found together with crude oil. Majority of natural gasses consists of methane and other hydrocarbons, and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, or helium.

Commercial natural gas mainly consists of 80-95 % methane so it is often referred to as methane (a chemical formula CH4). The term earth gas is also in use on a daily basis. Free natural gas is made from gas and gas-oil deposits by drilling into the belly of the earth to the depths of more than 1000 meters where one can find deposits more than one hunderd thousand years old.

The assigned quality of natural gas
After it has been extracted and brought to the surface of earth, natural gas is cleaned from water, other gasses, oil residues and mechanical impurities in order to bring it to the limits of assigned quality. After purification the natural gas is transported by gas lines of large diameters that consist of compressor stations, warehouses, metering and regulation stations to base transceiver stations and then it is transported by systems of distribution to the end user. Purified natural gas is lighter than air, without colour, smell or taste. For safety reasons, before it really comes to the end user, primarily in the distribution system, the odorization of natural gas is performed and that is a process where certain alloys are added to the natural gas so it has a recognizable smell.

Natural gas combustion
For a total combustion of a unit gauge (1 m3) of natural gas there needs to be approximately 2 m3 of oxygen. Natural gas combusts without smoke, without any char or ash. Also, there is no sulfur dioxide or carbon monoxide in combustion products so it doesn’t cause airpollution.

Basic thermoenergetic characteristics
Depending on its quality, the basic thermoenergetic characteristics of natural gas are in the following margins:

  • Wobbe index W= 44,6 to 54,0 MJ/m3
  • Upper thermal value Hu = 30,2 to 47,2 MJ/m3
  • Low thermal value Hl = 27,2 to 42,5 MJ/m3
  • Relative density d= 0,55 to 0,75 kg/ N m3
  • Combustion temperature T= 595 to 640 °C

Today, natural gas is widely used: in industry, for commercial use, consumer goods, the production of electricity, as a raw material in production and also for vehicle drive.

"CNG gas is the best alternative for all existing energy-generating products."
